Recently I was trying to install Windows 7 on a custom built system with an asus m2n-sli deluxe motherboard. When running through the Windows 7 Setup , the screen would stay on the “Starting Windows” screen and then eventually come back with a Blue Screen with the Error machine check exception. I tried different power supplys , windows disks and memory. Eventually I found machine check exception is in fact an issue with the processor speaking to the memory. I increased the CPU voltage from 1.41 volts to 1.51 and increased the DDR2 memory to 1.9v and Windows 7 setup went through fine!
Recently a user synced his iphone to an SBS 2003 box , however email would only come through when their Outlook was open recieving mail , or the user would read the email in Web Access. This is an issue to do with Active sync and Trend Antivirus that the below registry entry fixes :
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan via regedit
Change the value of “ProactiveScanning” to 1 and close.
Restart IIS and Exchange services to make sure it gets applied.
Recently a collegue contacted me for some help with his university degree. The project was to create a website that was backed by a database. My background is mainly PHP and MySQL however, the course had been teaching them how to manipulate an MDB Access Database file using ASP. The outline of the task was a document management system for projects.
- A user would enter their unique company number into a page
- It would list available projects for that company
- User would select the project and login with a username and password
- The website would list all files which he had permission to access
The tutorials the lecturer had given out used dreamweaver to create the ADODB.Connection , however it seemed an over complicated way of doing it. After a bit of online research my first ASP project is below ( Could be better but only had an evening to do it! )
code here : http://pastebin.com/7s739FKa
This code manages the Company ID input then list the projects from that company
Takes the project ID from index.asp and checks the permissions table after username and password verficiation for files they have access to
code here : http://pastebin.com/BmNiXZgz
File here : http://www.pariswells.com/upload/db.mdb
Users -> Username , Password and ID
Projects -> Project Name , Company ID Associated with that Project and Project ID
Permissions -> FileID and UserID
Company -> Company Name , Company Number and ID
Definitely prefer PHP to ASP!
If you run a “locked down” group policy model and need users to add new network and local printers to their machine without being Local Administrators you will need to configure the below group policy. This will stop the UAC Box in Windows 7 coming up and asking to administrator permissions to run “C:\windows\system32\NtPrint.exe”. This can be applied through a domain controller via a networked group policy or locally using gpedit.msc
In Windows XP this setting is configured in
User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Printers
However in Windows 7 this setting is configured in
Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Printers : Point and Print Restrictions
N.B. If you want to deploy the below group policy you will need to have your Domain Controllers up to the 2008 R2 Schema or use this tool to Modify the Windows 7 Policy
You need to set Point and Print Restrictions to DISABLED
Most Cloud Services such as Frontbridge or Google Apps now require you to verify ownership of your domain with a TXT DNS Record. I recently had to update this for a domain hosted with Easyspace and a quick search around the control panel and google for how to add this proved fruitless. Their control panel only gives you A Record, MX or CName…
Turns out after further investigation, you can’t do this yourself and you either have to raise a support ticket through your Customer Login or a bit quicker – call them on
Support : 0370 755 5066 ( 0370 calls are charged at a local rate in the UK )
Over the phone , they will give you an email to send the request to. This can take up to 3 hours for them to action , then another few hours to propagate
This information would have been really useful on here
http://helpdesk.ufindus.com/faq.php?do=article&articleid=1488 Where they tell you what a TXT Record is , or their DNS Records Page
Hope this information helps someone else!
You can perform the below fix manually , or I have create a .re file which does it http://www.pariswells.com/upload/fix.zip
You can use the EnableOnLoad registry entry to configure how you want Excel to handle opening workbooks for the OFV. By default, the EnableOnLoad entry is not present in the Windows registry. To add the EnableOnLoadentry to the Windows registry, follow these steps:
- Exit Excel.
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click to select the following registry key: **EDIT** Thanks to Frank in the comments , the proper key is ” HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0″ Old key “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\”
- After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
- Type Excel, and then press ENTER.
- Select Excel, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
- Type Security, and then press ENTER.
- Select Security, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
- Type FileValidation, and then press ENTER.
- Select FileValidation, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type EnableOnLoad, and then press ENTER. Note: The default value is 0 which disables the validation.
- On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
I moved an existing wordpress site from one server to another. After initial complications of getting the “White Screen of Death” of nothing showing this was caused by the MySQL being on another server instead of localhost. It should of given me a SQL error but for some reason it didn’t show!
Next issue was when I tried to get into the admin control panel on domain.com/wp-admin/ the webserver started serving pages as the raw php files for me to download instead of parsing them in the browser. I checked the folder permissions which the same as the server before. I tried copying a phpinfo.php file ( to check if it was a wordpress issue) but it wouldn’t even parse that! I created another folder and copied the phpinfo.php into there to try and it worked. I then copied all the wp-admin files into the new folder , renamed it to wp-admin after deleting the old folder and it worked!
After helping someone setup dual monitors on their computer with a Nvidia Geforce graphics card on Windows XP, the Nvidia drivers did not allow me to choose Dual View as an Nview option. The only options where to span or to clone. I was usuing the latest graphics drivers off the Nvidea site. I checked the display settings in Windows XP but the Nvidia drivers were only passing Windows XP a single Monitor ( Due to the Spanning Technology)
Tips online sugessted using “regedit” from the command prompt and search for “DisableDualView” and change value 0 to 1 however after a search I couldn’t find this record
Also check in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak and set the NvCplExposeWin2kDualView value to “0” instead of 1 however I could not find this.
I rolled the drivers back to a previous version noted ( Uninstall the previous nvidia software) : http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-258.96-whql-driver.html , rebooted the machine , and this removed the Spanning Technology and allowed Windows XP to see both monitors and enable dual desktops!
I’ve heard this issue can be caused if you have a grahics card with a DVI and VGA output , and you convert the DVI into back to VGA
When a new user was logging into Windows 7 machine the following error messaged dispalyed : “User Profile Service service failed the logon Windows 7”. This is usually down to a corrupt user profile, so I logged in as administrator and tried to find the users profile however is was not loaded in the registry or registered as a user profile in the System Advanced Settings.
Looking round the easiest resolve seemed a system restore to a previous date however this did not fix the issue. I checked the event log to find there was a user profile being setup in C:\Users\ area. After checking the folder I tried to delete all the tempory user profiles for the user ( e.g. .000 and .001 ) however I couldn’t due to permissions.
I opened the comma nd windows up as administrator and used the ‘ rmdir /s /q “C:\Users\Username” ‘ command however there where some files I couldn’t delete involved with the rapport service. Looking into the event log , when the profile was being built it was having issues copying in the .cfg’s files for Rapport.
I unistalled rapport , removed the temporary directorties and it worked!
