windows-vista-chkdsk-screenshot-09[1]After installing the following Windows Update : KB2823324 , the computer reboots and will do a CHKDSK on startup. Microsoft have removed this update however it has still been installed on machines

You will need to remove this Windows Update via the Add and Remove Programs , reboot the computer then run the following command :

J8699ARecently a HP 5406 Switch randomly crashed in the middle of a working day. A reboot fixed this however , we wanted to update the firmware from V12.16 to the latest version  K.15.09.0012, ROM K.15.28

After backing up all the config, We downloaded the K.15.09.0012 firmware to start with. These switches have Primary and Secondary firmwares which allows some fault tollerence when it comes to an upgrade. If the Primary firmware fails it will switch to secondary so you can reflash

Upon trying to upload the K.15.09.0012, ROM K.15.28 via the web interface , it error-ed on Internet Explorer and Firefox with no immediate error. The next method we tried was a Telnet Firmware Upgrade , a bit more long winded.

Next we telneted into the Switch , and used the Command Menu to bring up the Switch Menu

We then went to Download OS , entered the TFTP IP of the PC with the file and the file name , and it brought back

OK so the switch is bouncing back the file , probably because it’s referencing something with the current version ( The web interface should of been nice and told us this! )

After checking the ReadMe for the 15 upgrade , we found the following :

(BootROM K.12.12 – K.12.14)  Update and reload into software version K.13.58 or K.13.68

So we updated to K.13.68 (for BootROM updates only) via telnet which worked , and then updated to K.15.09.0012, ROM K.15.28

A customer wanted to show visitors when the last modification to the whole wordpress site was on the home page. There’s a function in WordPress which give you the function to the current post or page which is :

the_modified_time('F j, Y');

However to find out the whole site, you need to do the current MySQL Query :

$last_site_update = $wpdb->get_var( "SELECT post_modified FROM $wpdb->posts WHERE post_status = 'publish' ORDER BY post_modified DESC LIMIT 1" );

Then you can formulate it with PHP’s Date Function e.g. : echo date(‘F j, Y’, strtotime($last_site_update));

OpenAttachmentWhen trying to open an Office Document ( Work, Excel, Powerpoint etc) attachment in Outlook it displayes the following dialogue box

“You should only open attachments from a trustworthy Source”

As the tick box is greyed out, you can run a registry update to remove this Prompt for all Office Documents. This was the prompt will still display dangerous file types such as .exe

DuplicatingWordOn documents in Word 2003 with pages around 6 pages , when scrolling up and down a few times e.g. 3  -4 , it starts to duplicate to content on the screen. We expeirenced this in Citrix as well as locally. The issue is resolved by microsoft with a HotFix which is installed after Service Pack 3

PCTSafeWhen using the PCT-Easy Program to file a PCT-EASY type application (paper documents, accompanied by a physical medium containing the request form and abstract data in electronic form) it should save a Zip file containing the application and a log file.

However if it only generates the Zip file and you need to regenerate the Log File from an existing Zip , Select the application form from the PCT-Safe Submitted folder right click and select Resend from the menu. This will open a save as Menu to resave both the documents

specifiend save locationWhen create a new secure file in PGP Desktop the following error message is displayed when you try and save to a network Path

“The specified Save Location is not valid.”

This is a restriction on some old apps as well as this version of PGP Desktop which is up-to-date which disables saving to a UNC Path e.g.  \\server\user\data. The way around this is either to save locally to the machine or map the UNC path as a network drive and save via that network drive

DSSPlayerWhen opening DSS player after modifying the registry or profile settings you might get the following error message

Open up Regedit and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

Check for Templates

In my case the following folder was not available

%appdata%\microsoft\windows\template

Recreating this folder fixed the problem. This error message might also display MyDocuments , So I would check the My Documents path in Olympus in the program if you can get in or the registry is set correctly. If not reinstalling should recreate this!
