UPDATE

Since this post was written , Vmware have included USB passthrough in its most recent version 4.1

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1022290

The VMware Virtulised Operating systems ESXi and ESX do not support USB passthrough. VMware has stopped USB passthrough, as ESX was designed for VMotion. You can migrate Virtual Machines between physical servers and no one will notice. USB will prevent this, since VM is locked to physical USB port.

This brings a problem for Small Business’ when it comes down to their backup solutions. Large Enterprises will use SCSI or SAN which are compatible with VMotion. Luckily this problem has been resolved using a device from Belkin.

The Belkin Network 5-Port USB2.0 Hub maps up to 5 USB devices over a normal TCP/IP network for you. Installation is simple and once installed on a machine will immediately detect the plug and play devices connected to the HUB

This device will also solve issues with servers needing to access USB Dongles with hardware keys on them for anti piracy reasons as seen here

The cheapest I could find was one on Amazon for £52 including free postage

Sata Native ModeI was reinstalling Windows XP on a laptop , Upon loading the Serial ATA Drivers ( Via a floppy during setup ) and running the installation I was asked

“insert the disk labeled Intel Application Accelerator driver into drive A”
The Intel Application Accelerator driver uses AHCI for Native Hot Plugging a drive , which is something you are not going to hopefully need while installing windows. To stop this error message coming up I went into the BIOS and disabled AHCI for the windows Installation

If this is not an option for you, you might have to go ahead and create another floppy with the needed intel application accelerator driver!

14-wxp-boot3[1]

Here is a RAR file with all the needed drivers

Details on how to yourself :

Adventure-Works_lg[1] When a Small Business User logs into Remote Web Workplace on a Small Business Server 2008, when trying to login to one of the computers he might be greated with

“No computers are available” in Remote Web Wokplace for SBS 2008

This is down the the fact the user does not have any computers setup for him/her on the server. To setup some computers.

Login to the server , open the Windows SBS Console , Open the Users and Groups tab. Open up the user in question

Go to the computer Tab , then tick the box “Can Remotely access this computer” on the computers you wish to make available to the user. Setting the user as Local Administrator on these computers through this screen will automatically tick the “Can Remotely access this computer” box and grey it out.

Untrusted-Certificate[1] Upon setting up active sync with your windows mobile device and exchange server you may be greeted with this error message

Security Certificate on the server is not valid. Error 0x80072F0D

This is down to your device needing the certificate from the server to use Outlook Mobile Access. To download a self signed certificate on your site follow these instructions

You might be greeted with a warning
There is a problems with this website’s security certificate

LightboxIt seems if you do not have a title value for hyperlink with Lightbox , Internet Explorer displays a null value for the default description

Lightbox has released an update and the changelog fixes this error

However if you are using a third party tool, where you cannot modify the main lightbox files , you can resolve this issue by setting the title flag yourself in the hyperlink to nothing e.g.

<a href=’picture.gif’ rel=’lightbox’ title=””><img src=”thumbpic.gif” border=”0″></a><br><a class=’linkHiRes’ href=’pricingpage.gif’></a>

Adobe Acrobat 8 After trying to create a PDF by printing to the PDF Printer , I recieved this error

“Adobe PDF creation cannot continue because Acrobat is not activated.”

I choose help , then activate , but both activate and deactivate where greyed out. Upon investigation the FLEXnet Licensing Service service in Windows has been disabled and set to manual. Changing this back to automatic and starting the service fixed this problems

Excel Logo

I had 4 XLA Files, that I need to roll out to multiple machines across a network. These XLA files needed to be installed in a certain order. I found some Visual Basic Scripting Code ( off AppDeploy.com ) to add the Add-In and Enable it ( Can do this manualy by going to Tools , Add ins )

On Error Resume Next
Dim oXL
Dim oAddin
Set oXL = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
oXL.Workbooks.Add
Set oAddin = oXL.AddIns.Add("\\Network Path\NameOfXLAAddIn.xla", True)
oAddin.Installed = True
oXL.Quit
Set oAddin = Nothing
Set oXL = Nothing

I saved this code in a .vbs file , and created a vbs file for each of the xla files that need installing. I then created a .bat file to run these in order. What I found was that only half of the XLA’s where being added to the machine. I checked in the local Add in’s directory ( C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns ) and the Addin’s wearn’t being copied from the server before being registered.

I then added an xcopy function to the BAT file to copy the file manually before adding , and this resolved the issue

xcopy "\\Server Path\Example.xla" "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns" /y

Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key.…

There are 2 possible fixes to this. The first is to download some software AVG have wrriten to fix the issue from here

Unzip the file and run the .bat file.

If this still does not resolve your issue you will need to manually change the registery permissions

Here’s how I fixed the problem…

  2. Right-click on the Windows key.
  3. Choose Permissions, then click Advanced.

Vista Blue Screen of DeathAfter performing some windows updates on a Windows Server 2008 Datacenter box , I restarted the Virtual Machine to find a blue screen of death with the following error

File: \windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
Status: 0XC0000098
Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt.

The machine wouldn’t boot into safe mode , after some more research this kernel file is used in Windows Vista.

I copied the file from another Windows Server 2008 Datacenter boxVirtual Machine , and luckily the machine booted fine. Here’s a link to the file
