Trying to change the Domain name of a primary user and SMTP address in Admin.Microsoft.com brought up the following error

An exception of type Microsoft.Online.BOX.Util.Exceptions.InternalException (EXOBadRequest) was thrown.

Changing this in Entra.microsoft.com for the User fixed the issue
