After trying to create a PDF by printing to the PDF Printer , I recieved this error
“Adobe PDF creation cannot continue because Acrobat is not activated.”
I choose help , then activate , but both activate and deactivate where greyed out. Upon investigation the
FLEXnet Licensing Service service in Windows has been disabled and set to manual. Changing this back to automatic and starting the service fixed this problems

You have no idea how muc this post has helped me and my business. This problem kept recurring after every installation and repair installation. Just wanted to say thanks
Dude, you’re the man… after going throuh ADOBE’s less than helpful steps, nothing worked, then BAM, i saw your post and Voila! I’m always amazed at how the manufacturers can’t even figure out their own problems… Thanks a mil!
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the post. I wonder if it was a window’s update that disabled it.
Hi
I am having this exact problem with adobe acrobat (v8.2.0), however I do not know how to set the “FLEXnet Licensing Service” to automatic and “start the service”. When I run msconfig and go to services tab the FLEXnet Licensing Service says it is running. I would love it if you could help me as I cannot pdf any documents anymore!
Thank you very much
Zanny
Hey guys I think I’ve found it – the culprit is acrotray.exe, open windows task manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL), list alphabetically by name, find acrotray.exe and end process. This stops the problem check out http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewtopic.php?id=17247
Don’t ask why, I’m not a computer whizz, just a very very happy person right now.
Acrotray.exe die! (If anyone knows why this works please let us all know!)
Hey Zanny, Thank you very much. It worked. You’ve just save my day. I don’t know why this worked, but i’ve disabled acotray.exe (if this is acrobat tray icon in traybar) at start up (booting OS) maybe this is the problem…
Zanny thanks for the solution to this problem. It worked for me
Thanks for the awesome and helpful post. FlexNet service was indeed disabled on my PC. Just FYI, you can quickly bring up the services dialog by typing the following in Start Menu > Run:
services.msc
Killing acrotray.exe in the Process Manager might work as well.
Thanks – it worked. (acrotray.exe)
I’ve had this problem forever. I always restarted my computer to fix it when it occurred. Now I realize that ending acrotray.exe fixes it. I also changed my FlexNet to automatic, but I’m not sure whether that’s ever been the problem.
I usually manage to fix the problem by deleting the acrotray process and the Flexnet file. But sometimes it doesn’t work, and here’s the fix that does – although who knows why!
When I’m trying to ‘print’ a PDF (ie using the print menu and print drivers), and it tells me Acrobat is not activated, I then go into MS-Word. I open a doc. I then click on the toolbar where the PDF icon is (ie not through the printer drivers but through the toolbar) and I click to automatically convert the doc to a PDF. It quote happily does it, no problems, and then I can go print PDFs using the driver in the normal way from any app as if there had never been a problem.
Infuriating problem which renders expensive software unusable – no single fix. Good luck, everyone!
Thank you so much I’ve been fighting with this problem for several months now running Adobe Acrobat 9. Stopping acrotray.exe from running fixes the problem. The Adobe website lists 10 different difficult ways that don’t fix the problem….How annoying. Especially after paying an arm and a leg for the product….why don’t they just fix the bug? But I digress. Thank you for posting a solution that works!
OH MY GOSH – thank you! End process acrotray.exe – I’m SO frustrated with Adobe’s unwillingness to support their products. I have CS3 and because I won’t upgrade to CS newest, they wouldn’t help me with this problem and I’ve battled it for SO long. It’s not fun when you’re a designer and need to make everything into pdfs and can’t! THANK YOU THANK YOU
I’ve tried the end process for acrotray.exe and it still doesnt work. where do I go to change the flexnet settings?
Thanks Zanny…. u r the best buddy
Cameron, go to run and type services.msc and press enter… look for flexnet there and change it to automatic… i dont know whether it will work for you or not, coz for me ending the acrotray worked perfectly.
hey guys…if zou start flexnet /services.msc you just turn on acrotray. seems it will not work.
just kill acrotray
Killing acrotray worked like a charm for me. Thanks for the HUGE productivity improvement … I love you all!
Many thanks…
End acrotry.exe process works fine with me.
This is a great as a temporary work around but I was wondering if anyone had found a permanent solution. I am mainly wondering if perhaps everyone here is Running Symantec AV and which version, I’ve had issues with them stopping other programs so if it’s a common denominator we somthething else to look at.
Thank you very much. Re-enabling the Flexnet service did it for me. I had a small problem where opening a pdf threw up a licensing error too, so I just ended the process acrotray.exe from task manager, and lo and behold it works!
Thanx zanny it worked
thanks zanny…its worked for me also…
Thanks for providing these suggestions. I just ended the acrotray in Windows Task Manager, and it solved the problem (at least for now).
Thanks Zanny. Killing acrotray worked for me too. Stupid Adobe. WTF?
Paris, you are a genius! FlexNet was my problem!
Hi Zanny,
Hey Zanny, Thank you very much. It worked after I desactivated Acrotray.exe
Thank a lot man.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been living with this problem for many months, finding workarounds to printing PDFs and generally being frustrated that I couldn’t print from FrameMaker. Your guidance is immensely helpful!
