{"id":7062,"date":"2023-06-20T22:23:48","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T22:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/?p=7062"},"modified":"2025-10-09T03:40:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T03:40:34","slug":"how-to-clear-old-adfs-instance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/research\/how-to-clear-old-adfs-instance","title":{"rendered":"How to clear old ADFS Instance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Recently installed Windows Defender for Identity and got the Alert &#8220;Auditing on the ADFS container is not enabled as required on domain.com&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ADFS was not being used and had not been cleared properly fro the domain <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the ADSIEdit tool, connect to the Default naming context by following these steps:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right-click&nbsp;<strong>ADSI Edit<\/strong>, and then click&nbsp;<strong>Connect to<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Connection Point<\/strong>, click&nbsp;<strong>Select a well-known Naming Context<\/strong>, and then select&nbsp;<strong>Default naming context<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expand the following node:<br><strong>Default naming context, {your domain partition}, CN=Program Data, CN=Microsoft, CN=ADFS<\/strong>&nbsp;NoteUnder&nbsp;<strong>CN=ADFS<\/strong>, you see a container named&nbsp;<strong>CN={GUID}<\/strong>&nbsp;for each AD FS 2.0 farm that you have deployed, where&nbsp;<strong>{GUID}<\/strong>&nbsp;matches the&nbsp;<strong>CertificateSharingContainer<\/strong>&nbsp;property that you captured by using the&nbsp;<code>Get-AdfsProperties<\/code>&nbsp;PowerShell command in step 1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the appropriate&nbsp;<strong>{GUID}<\/strong>&nbsp;container, and then select&nbsp;<strong>Delete<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Really just the<strong> CN=Microsoft,CN=Container,CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=aha,DC=local<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needs to exist , so for change control , I just moved the ADFS Folder to a new OU before I deleted<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CN=Restore,DC=aha,DC=local<\/strong> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently installed Windows Defender for Identity and got the Alert &#8220;Auditing on the ADFS container is not enabled as required on domain.com&#8221; ADFS was not being used [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[4258,2013],"class_list":["post-7062","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-research","tag-auditing-on-the-adfs-container-is-not-enabled-as-required","tag-clear"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7062","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7062"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7062\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9287,"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7062\/revisions\/9287"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7062"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7062"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pariswells.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7062"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
