This can be done using the Expire function in Outlook however this will only clear Unread Items. Read items will appear to have a line through them but still be present.<\/p><h2>Without Office 365<\/h2><p>\u00a0In the <strong>Properties<\/strong> dialog (In Outlook 2007, it is <strong>Message Options<\/strong> dialog), please check the <strong>Expires after<\/strong> box under <strong>Delivery options<\/strong>. And then select an expired date and time from the drop-down lists. And then click <strong>Close<\/strong>. See screenshot:<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.extendoffice.com\/images\/stories\/doc-outlook\/doc-delete-expired-emails\/doc-delete-emails-after-days-4.png\" \/><\/p><h3>Configure the Global AutoArchive Settings to delete these expired emails after a certain period of time via Outlook<\/h3><p>Go to File , Options and Advanced and Choose AutoArchive ( If this is not present this is because you already have an archive e.g. in 365 )<\/p><p>Choose how frequently you want AutoArchive to run. Default is 14 days but you can choose any number between 1 and 60 days.\u00a0Choose &#8220;Delete expired items ( e-mail folders only)&#8221;<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22651 img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/static.slipstick.com\/images\/2011\/08\/global-archive-settings.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.slipstick.com\/images\/2011\/08\/global-archive-settings.png 365w, https:\/\/cdn.slipstick.com\/images\/2011\/08\/global-archive-settings-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/cdn.slipstick.com\/images\/2011\/08\/global-archive-settings-110x110.png 110w, https:\/\/cdn.slipstick.com\/images\/2011\/08\/global-archive-settings-325x323.png 325w, https:\/\/cdn.slipstick.com\/images\/2011\/08\/global-archive-settings-45x45.png 45w\" alt=\"Global AutoArchive Settings in Outlook\" width=\"365\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p><h2>With 365<\/h2><p>You will not be able to turn on Autoarchive to clear the epired\u00a0items. 365 wants you to use Retention policies that are applied to mailboxe folders. Transport rules don&#8217;t apply retention tags so there is no way to automatically add a Retention Policy on emails being sent from a specific email\u00a0<\/p><p>You can use an Outlook rule to move emails with a specific subject or From Address to a folder and apply the retention\u00a0policy onto that<\/p><p>If you want something set up automatically so that the user doesn&#8217;t need to do that themselves, Inbox Rules can be created using PowerShell, and retention tags can be stamped on folders\/items using PowerShell + EWS (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.technet.microsoft.com\/exchange\/2013\/05\/20\/using-exchange-web-services-to-apply-a-personal-tag-to-a-custom-folder\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/blogs.technet.microsoft.com\/exchange\/2013\/05\/20\/using-exchange-web-services-to-apply-a-personal-tag-to-a-custom-folder\/<\/a>).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I was asked to find a solution for a message sent internally\u00a0that would automatically delete after a certain period of time.
