Enable SSH on the ESXi Machine and run the following

esxcfg-info | grep "Serial N"

If this doesnt work then you can use something like this in powershell however it needs Vcenter and Vsphere CLI

Get-VMHost | Select Name,
    @{N='Serial';E={(Get-EsxCli -VMHost $_).hardware.platform.get().SerialNumber}} |
Export-Csv serial.csv -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture

I logged into https://h41111.www4.hpe.com/storage/msafirmware.html

To download the latest firmware for my 2040 , however, I needed to link my Device warranty to my HP Passport account

With only remote access to the Unit, I needed the Chasis Serial and Product Number

To get this on an MSA if you SSH into the device and do a “SHOW CONFIG”

Press Enter until you hit the SKU

Product Number for MSA 2040 is : K2R80A

When Serially consoling into a Cisco Switch I got the following grey blocks

I’ve tried the following things:

  • New laptop
  • Baud Rates
  • Encoding
  • New cable
  • New adapter
  • Tera Term instead of putty
  • Verified the cable works with another switch

Fix

Use a laptop with a Serial Port built in or Docking station as it seems to be a USB driver issue
