<description>Original instructions were posted by &#039;theindian&#039; and found here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/21909-copy-removable-storage-service-vista-7-a-2.html

The original instructions from &#039;theindian&#039; have been modified/cleaned up a bit by me but are at their core from &#039;theindian&#039; and I&#039;m grateful to him for posting them and give him full credit.

My installation my configuration varies a bit and is on an AMD Athelon 64 X2 Dual
Core 4200 Asus M2N32-SLI Delux based home built system running Windows 7 Ulitmate 64 Bit with an Adaptec Ultra 160 29160 SCSI adapter and an HP SureStore DAT40 DDS4 dat drive and used VMWare WorkStation 7.1 .

The driver for Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008R2) u160_w7_ws08r2_x64_drv_b7_5_645_100.exe, can be downloaded
from Adaptec at http://www.adaptec.com.au/en-US/speed/scsi/windows/u160_w7_ws08r2_x64_drv_b7_5_645_100_exe.htm if needed.

The following are the slightly modified instructions that worked well for me:

My Setup (&#039;theindian&#039;):
- Windows 7 Ultimate English 64Bit

- SCSI AHA-2940U2W (for any others readers: Yes, Yes, Yes, I was able to have my old 2940U2W
functional in Windows 7-64Bit. I signed the aic78u2.sys from Win2003-RC2-64 driver with my own test Certificate and I used djsvs.inf (renamed in aic78u2.inf) from Vista-64 with some modif for installation to be able to load in Windows 7 in TestMode but not very elegant. Re.: Windows 7 must be configured in Test Mode to load a driver with a test certificate but need to live with a watermark or hack your Windows 7 to have ModeTest watermark disappear. I&#039;m waiting for an used Adaptec 29160 bought on Ebay where
supported in Windows 7 by Adaptec drivers and compatible with a 32Bits PCI slot )

- DLT-8000 with 64Bits driver downloaded from Quantum

- I used VMWare WorkStation 7 (or 7.1 my config)

- SCSI and Tape drive MUST be present and working in Device manager of the Windows 7 before continuing.

In VMware:
- Install a Guest Windows XP or directly import your old Physical XP in VM (File, Import or Export and follow instructions), you will virtualized your physical to virtual (P2V)

Note: I got the following error trying to start the VM after installing &#039;The VMware Authorization Service is not running&#039;, this was resolved by right clicking on the &#039;VMWare Workstation&#039; icon and selecting &#039;Run as Administrator&#039;

- When install completes, shutdown your Guest XP

- In VMWare, select your XP Virtual Machine, then in VMWare menu, select VM, Settings..., Add, Select &#039;Generic SCSI Device&#039;, then if everything is Ok, you supposed to see TAPE0 in list, check the &#039;Connect at power on&#039; box, then finish.

- When you are then returned to &#039;Virtual Machine Settings&#039;, keep the default &#039;Connnection&#039; you&#039;ll see on the right side in &#039;Virtual device node&#039; list

- While still on the &#039;Virtual Machine Settings&#039;config window, go to the &#039;Options&#039; tab, and select the &#039;Shared Folders&#039; option on the left, then select the radio button next to &#039;Always enabled&#039; and share your host drive (Ex.: c:\) or dir as you want by clicking the &#039;Add&#039; button on the bottom of the left side. Make sure the &#039;Read Only&#039; option is not Checked if you want restore!

- Check the &#039;Map as a network drive in Windows guests&#039; box. Because NTBackup is not able to backup a VMWARE share drive but will use the network share OK!!!

- Click the &#039;OK&#039; button at the bottom of &#039;Virtual Machine Settings&#039; to save your changes.

- Boot your Guest XP

- In my case, VM was mapped my host share to Z:\ in Windows Explorer under &quot;Shared Folders on &#039;vmware-host&#039;&quot; on my Guest XP VM

- You&#039;ll see your tape drive in device manager and in RSM of your Guest XP

- Use NTBackup as you would before on any Windows XP PC! Or your old backup software from your Old XP. You can find the Windows XP backup program under &#039;C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools&#039;. Just insert your tape, run NTBackup, catalog your tape if needed and go.

- I&#039;m very surprise by the performance (of my elephant) with one 1Go on my Hosts! I&#039;m hurry to receive my 29160 and move this setup to my I7.

Hope this helps others as it did me.
