What is WorkSite 9.0?

The latest release of WorkSite, an evolution of WorkSite 8.5 server and clients for improved document, email, records, and matter management.  WorkSite 9.0 is a foundation platform for true secure global deployments and private clouds.

What are the key features of WorkSite 9.0 release?

The key features of WorkSite 9.0 are:

  • Unicode (if applicable)
  • Encryption
  • Hybrid Security Model
  • Autonomy Control Centre Dashboard
  • IPV6 Support
  • WorkSite Anywhere (HTTPS Support)
  • WorkSite Cache Mode (for downloads)

Which languages have been localized for WorkSite 9.0?

The initial client releases of WorkSite 9.0 are made available in English.  Customers may translate common dialogs for specific regions using OTB WorkSite tools like the Dialog Editor.

Fully localized versions of the client applications (i.e. English, French, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese) are expected in subsequent updates for 9.0 tentatively scheduled for 1H 2012.

How can I get access to WorkSite 9.0?

WorkSite 9.0 is now available for download through the Autonomy iManage Support Site.  A WorkSite 9 Resource Page has been created to provide a complete list of downloads and documentation related to WorkSite 9.0.

Is WorkSite 9.0 server backwards compatible?

WorkSite 9.0 Server is backwards compatible with WorkSite 8.5 database and 8.x client applications.  Note several of the listed capabilities are dependent on a complete upgrade of the database, server and client applications.  For example Unicode support requires that all WorkSite components be upgraded to WorkSite 9.0.

What is involved in upgrading to WorkSite 9.0?

WorkSite 9.0 provides significant advantages on the server side.  While the upgrade is straight-forward, Autonomy recommends seeking properly trained and informed deployment assistance through consulting services, certified system integration partners, or your own up-to-date, WorkSite-trained staff.  The upgrade will involve deployment of a new WorkSite Server, WorkSite Communications Server and WorkSite clients.  WorkSite 9.0 is compatible WorkSite 9.0 with WorkSite IDOL Indexer 8.5 sp2 U2.

WorkSite 9.0 has minimal client changes so end user training is minimized and client interactions remain consistent.

Note that upgrading to WorkSite 9.0 may also require upgrades to dependent systems like your database, SharePoint Server and Microsoft Office.

Do I need to update my customizations for WorkSite 9.0?

WorkSite APIs are backwards compatible and customizations should work in compatibility mode with older WorkSite clients.  However, client customizations with the WorkSite 9.0 clients must be coded using WorkSite 9.0 API libraries and ensure that all metadata is handled and persisted as Unicode strings.  Failure to do so will result in data corruption.

Is the WorkSite Microsoft Office integration different in WorkSite 9.0?

WorkSite 9.0 Microsoft Office integration is similar to the WorkSite 8.5 SP3 Microsoft Office integration with the added facility to handle Unicode data.

What is the significance of WorkSite 9.0 Unicode support?

WorkSite has always been able to handle document content in any language however prior versions of WorkSite were restricted to certain language(s) based on the database code page.  For example, the Western European code page only stores languages like English, French, German, Spanish etc.  It does not support storage of Asian characters for example.  Provides the ability to have profile or metadata from multiple character-sets within the same library.  Workspaces, folders, dialogs & other objects may be configured to display in any language.  WorkSite 9.0 enables full library consolidation in regions like Eastern and Western Europe and APAC.

All WorkSite 9.0 server and client components will be released with Unicode support and makes it easier for customers to localize dialogs for their internal deployments.  In order to enable full Unicode, all WorkSite clients must be upgraded to WorkSite 9.0.

How does WorkSite 9.0 address New Governance and Encryption Regulations?

Increased sensitivity to securing content in law firms and corporations has led to an increased need to encrypt the data stored in any enterprise repository, including the WorkSite library content.  WorkSite 9.0 offers storage encryption in response to the increasing regulations, specifically HIPAA /HITECH Act in the United States.  It limits exposure of client data to malicious access or other data breaches on the back-end.  It also ensures all data access is done through proper development channels so that all reads are recorded in audit trails and no applications by-pass security.

What is Hybrid Security in WorkSite 9.0?

WorkSite 9.0 Hybrid Security provides better inherent support for ethical walls because it allows for a combination of Optimistic Security for grants and Pessimistic Security for revokes.  Hybrid Security simplifies denials.  IT and end users can more easily interpret security settings and establish proper security within a more familiar security model because it works more like Windows security.

Does WorkSite 9.0 support IPv6?

WorkSite 9.0 supports IPv6 for all client communications.  WorkSite Server also supports IPv6 to back-end components like the SQL database, file servers, WorkSite Indexer and clustering components.

IPv6 enables technologies like Microsoft DirectAccess, giving mobile users seamless access to corporate networks without the use of a VPN.

What is WorkSite Anywhere? What benefits does support of HTTPS in WorkSite 9.0 provide?

In a local area network (LAN) environment, WorkSite clients communicate with the WorkSite Server by using remote procedure call (RPC) with Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).  This method provides quick and efficient access in a corporate network.  However, access to WorkSite when you are outside of your organization’s firewall, such as when you are at home or traveling, usually requires a virtual private network (VPN) connection to the organization’s network.  A VPN provides you with a connection within an organization’s network and within its firewall.

For remote connections, WorkSite Desktop Clients offer WorkSite Anywhere, an alternative to VPN connections that allows you to use WorkSite just as you normally do at your organization, without the need for any special connections or hardware, such as smart cards and security WorkSite 9.0 tokens.  WorkSite clients can connect to the WorkSite Server through the Internet by using remote procedure call (RPC) over HTTPS.

How does WorkSite 9.0 simplify desktop upgrades?

WorkSite 9.0 provides easier desktop upgrades through automatic upgrade of custom configurations, handling re-install in the install package, and consolidation of installation packages like FileSite and EMM.

The new WorkSite App v2.0 will need a new version of the WorkSite Mobility Server in order to support these new capabilities.

A new release of WorkSite Mobility 9.0 for Blackberry is also planned in the coming months, which will offer Unicode support & encryption of local data on the device.

WorkSite Mobility Releases for iOS & Blackberry will be available following the GA release of the core WorkSite 9.0 components.

Are the WorkSite 9.0 Mobility updates compatible with iPhone 4s?

WorkSite 9.0 Mobility is compatible with the iPhone 4s.

What does the OffSite Cache capability of WorkSite 9.0 provide?

In WorkSite 9.0 all client applications (e.g. FileSite/DeskSite) will use the local cache when viewing or downloading content.  If the local cached version has been synchronized by OffSite and is current, it delivers a faster user experience and reduces the amount of network traffic.  OffSite Cache has a dramatic impact on users who work in remote offices, over a weak connection or with larger documents.

How does WorkSite 9.0 help reduce the client footprint?

WorkSite 9.0 leverages the capabilities of Microsoft Office 2010 to include integration with native Microsoft Office 2007/2010 PDF capabilities, Document Comparison, OLE Linking.  Reducing the footprint on the Desktop means IT can leverage bundled WorkSite settings and configuration management, with improved maintenance of custom settings across updates.  Client installations, such as DeskSite, FileSite and Email Management have also been bundled to reduce maintenance overhead.
